Its very exciting to be coming back to Rigoletto for the first time since my operatic debut many years ago. This time I'll be at San Diego Opera making my company debut as Marullo. I'm especially looking forward to performing in San Diego again, which has become home to me and a place of major artistic growth beginning with my summers at Opera NEO honing my craft. Incidentally it is where I met my fiancée and currently where we make our home.
Rigoletto, for me, was a gateway drug. I was passionately in love with opera as an observer, but had never experienced the process of learning a whole role. I had the good fortune of being cast as Sparafucile and began the painstaking process of putting all the pieces together. That was where I really learned what being an operatic performer was. And incidentally where I learned how much work there was to do to achieve the artistic goals I had. All of this was build around one of Verdi's most memorable scores with some of his most complicated and honest characters.
